I'm sorry that it has been awhile since I last posted, but I have been incredibly busy. It just seems that the busyness of life all hits at once. Thankfully, I have been one busy woman making all kinds of gifts and taking orders from Jilly's Boutique. I really wouldn't know what to do if I wasn't going 100 miles per hour most days. On to something fun...
Over Labor Day weekend, I put in over 6 hours in cake baking and decorating. The Wednesday before, I got a call to make a special first birthday cake for a little girl in our church. I was very apprehensive as this is the first time I had made a cake for purchase and one of this size!
The theme for the birthday party was a sock monkey. I sent some picture options for the cake to the Mom. She choose a tiered cake with polkadots and a fondant monkey. I had never worked with fondant. I knew this would test my limits and see what I was truly capable. If you know me at all, I am always up for a challenge! Just tell me I can't do something and you have sparked a burning fire within me.

My Second Course Cake
It has been a crazy busy week. I'm beginning to wonder if life will slow down from here on out! I do have a two week break before I start my third Wilton Cake Decorating Course.

Cake Decorating Class and my new toy
For the month of August, I have been taking my second cake decorating class. I love learning all these new flowers and how to make them.
Last Monday, I made my last batch of royal icing for class. It must be beat using a mixer for 7-10 minutes. This was my second batch of the day and boom, sparks flew and a weird smell came out of my mixer. Oh no, not again! Yes, I have burned up yet another hand mixer. Confession time: This is my fifth mixer that I have burned up. I must bake too much or make heavy duty items that don't go well with a hand mixer. After the demise of #5, I knew it was time to shell out the big bucks and get a Kitchenaid stand mixer.

Rosette Cake
My sweet Anna turned 2 on Friday. For two weeks she talked about having a princess cake and being a princess. I guess it starts early.
I figured that since we would be having a small party I would forego our normal Sam's Club cake and I would put my new cake decorating skills to work.

My Second Cake Decorating Class
Happy Valentine's Day! I hope your day is filled with feeling loved and loving other people!
Yesterday, I had my second cake decorating class. It was a ton of fun. I have been practicing using the bags and tips all week and I was ready to tackle a cake!
Being the over eager student that I am, I practiced everything for the week ahead prior to class. (Yep, I am one of those students. I can't deny it). I also found a great resource for learning some basic cake decorating. Did you know that Wilton has its own you tube channel? I am now in love. Here is a link to the main you tube channel.
I watched two videos last week in preparation for class. If you are interested in learning some new skills, these are a great resource to start with.
This is a video on how to ice a cake using the tip 789. It is so much easier and smoother than using a spatula.
The second video that I viewed was how to make Rosettes. I thought these were beautiful and easy to do!
I utilized my new learned skills to decorate my cake in class today. The teacher is great and very helpful so it is nice to try new things in class. I wanted my cake to be decorated for Valentine's Day. I used a transfer technique for the heart, it was my first time so it wasn't perfect. I also want to work on the shells that I did the border along the bottom. They aren't quite right. Other than that, I am very pleased with my first attempt at decorating a cake.
What do you think?
I can't wait to show you some of the ideas I want to try on future cakes.

Cake Decorating Class
I have always wanted to take a cake decorating class. I see all these amazing cakes on Cake Boss, Ace of Cakes, and Pinterest and I am envious of their talent. Now, I don't plan on going profession with any newly learned decorating skills, but it would be nice to make some nice gifts or cakes for my children's birthdays.
I am taking the Wilton Basics class from our local Joann's store. Yesterday was my first class. I convinced my friend Jen to take the class with me. We both have little ones and don't get out just to ourselves very often. It is nice to just spend time with each other without little ones running around. Jen has some experience decorating cakes, but she wanted to learn all the ins and outs. I will have to convince her to send me some pictures of her cakes and a mini tutorial as they are amazing!
Let me share with you some of my first attempts at decorating and a great video tutorial on putting together clean icing bags.
